About
My obsession with fitness began when I was twelve years old. Overweight, unhappy with my appearance and battling extremely low self-confidence, I started working out from home in my basement. Slowly, I developed the courage to seek out actual training facilities and found myself as one of the few students making use of my junior high and high school gyms. The slow but noticeable progress I had made over my middle years pushed me to pursue fitness academically, leading to the completion of my bachelor’s degree of Kinesiology from the University of Manitoba. While I was unsure exactly what a degree in Kinesiology would mean for my career options, I knew it was one of the few topics that held my interest - if nothing else than for my own personal benefit.
During my undergraduate experience, albeit through happenstance, I discovered that Kinesiology was actually my passion. More specifically, understanding the intricacies of exercise physiology and human performance (primarily, my own) and repeatedly sharing that knowledge with others on the same, often frustrating, pursuit of their goals. Reliving the thrill of breaking plateaus and mentally freeing prospective trainees through evidence-based practice and education has anchored me to this profession for over 10,000 hours of personal training, programming, consulting, and educating over a decade-long career thus far.
After completing my undergraduate degree and spending some time in the field, I returned to the University of Manitoba to better equip myself for longevity and to better serve my clients. I completed additional degrees in Human Nutrition Sciences (BSc) and a Master of Science degree in Kinesiology before returning to full time Personal Training. Since then I have remained active in academics, publishing several papers (linked below) with my former lab group and delving into Personal Training Education through the commercial gym scene in Winnipeg.
More recently I have started to explore fitness writing with Barbend.com. I have also formally branched into continued education, working with Pre-Script to deliver the highest quality fitness education to coaches, clinicians, and athletes.
My experience over the years has spanned a broad range of client needs and goals. From body composition and strength training, to endurance aerobic training, to management of chronic conditions or rehabilitation, chances are I have some experience that may apply to you. That same obsession for understanding exercise science and practically applying my knowledge has not diminished since my first pair of 5-pound dumbbells.
I look forward to helping you in any way that I can!
